Route Description

The school path begins in front of the hotel and goes over the hill to Tolsta Chaolais.

OS Landranger 8 (Stornoway & North Lewis) or 13 (West Lewis & North Harris)

Heritage Information

The Doune Braes Hotel was formerly a school, and the old road that runs from Tolsta Chaolais to the hotel was built for children to get to the school. Nineteenth century legislation required children to attend schools so the Congested Districts Board, set up in 1897, funded the construction of footpaths.
