Route DescriptionNewsflash (September 2017): this old route across Rannoch Moor features in episode 3 Taming The Wild of the BBC series Grand Tours of Scotland's Lochs, along with Telford's route over the Black Mount. If you'd like to watch the programme, be quick, as it's only on the iplayer until 23rd October.
From Rannoch Station go west round the head of Loch Laidon and follow the signposted track through the wood, then climb gradually and contour across the hillside until above the ruined cottage of Tigh na Cruaiche, about 6km from Rannoch Station.
From there continue due west at the same level for 3.5km to the start of a track which is followed across several streams to reach Black Corries Lodge at the foot of Meall nan Ruadhag. Follow the diversion of the right of way round the lodge buildings. Finally go along the private road for 5km to Kingshouse Hotel. Electricity poles mark the line from Rannoch to Black Corries. The middle section of this route is very boggy when wet, so it is best to do it in dry weather when the ground underfoot is reasonably firm.
OS Landranger 41 (Ben Nevis, Fort William & surrounding area) and either 42 (Glen Garry & Loch Rannoch area) or 51 (Loch Tay)
Heritage Information
This is an old right of way and drove road across Rannoch Moor. The inn at Kinghouse was a vital part of the droving network - Haldane notes that during the eighteenth and early nineteenth century the innkeeper paid no rent and had an annual Government grant. Doire na h-Innes, a mile east of Rannoch station, was a drove stance since before the railway.
Tigh na Cruiche was a shepherd's house, although it is ruined, there is a bothy.
